Below is a general course syllabus to help you plan for the trimester. Any timeline changes will be communicated on this site and in class:

  • Wiki Created and the themes applied (color and format): Due by March 4, 2011
  • 6 wiki pages created, linked and formatted (About me, College skills . . .): Due by March 18, 2011

    • All three sections: "About Me" paragraph, "How to Use My Wiki" paragraph, and picture; due by March 25, 2011. example

Purpose:
College for Every Student (CFES) is a technology-based leadership class designed to help students prepare for college. The class focuses on identifying and using college-based skills, peer mentoring, service leadership and college pathways, so students will be able to transition smoothly into high school and hone abilities that will carry on to college.


Essential Learning Goals (ELG's):
1) I will be able to use college based skills
2) I will be able to create and maintain a digital portfolio
3) I will be able to practice peer mentoring both academically and behaviorally
4) I will be able to develop and perform service leadership activities
5) I will be able to describe pathways to college

What do the ELG's Mean?

1) "College Based Skills" include: Using planners, learning note-taking styles, goal setting and collaborative skills.
2) The "Digital Portfolio" will be a wikispace that is maintained by the students to serve as a digital record of mentoring, service leadership, college research and college skills projects completed.
3) "Peer Mentoring" will come in a variety of forms, but it is basically serving as a positive role model for others.
4) "Service Leadership" is working for the common good of the community by identifying its needs and working to meets these needs through service activities.
5) "Pathways to College" include tasks such as completing mock college applications and financial aid; as well as, students doing research and compiling data on a college of interest.


How will I meet my ELG's?

1) College Based Skills will be taught in class in the first few weeks of school. You will keep a record of these skills, and you will explain them in the Digital Portfolio.
2) We will create and maintain the digital portfolio in class; however, you may need to maintain it outside of class if there is unfinished work. After the trimester ends, I highly encourage keeping the portfolio up-to-date, so you can maximize its full potential as a digital record. For the portfolio requirements, check the pdf. below:

3 and 4) For Peer Mentoring and Service Leadership, you will need to keep a running log of all service and mentoring hours using the pdf. below:

5) Pathways to College will come in the forms of internet research, college visits, and attending college fairs. These will be done in and out of school, and I will keep students posted as to available opportunities to help meet this goal.
